The older I become the more painful today becomes.
When I hung the flag at the front of my home this morning, I thought of my Dad and his service. He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific and survived enemy torpedoes and typhoons. And I thought of his fellow servicemen who didn’t survive to come home and try to build a better world. It makes me sad to think of squandering that legacy, which sometimes I feel like we are doing. But I refuse to give up hope.

Hope is always the last thing to be given up, I feel the same. The poem you quoted always brings a tear to my eye, at this time of year it reduces me to a quivering jelly.
