A bold claim, perhaps, but I honestly think that amongst all the pictures I’ve ever taken from all over the world, this one makes me smile the most.
I used to see these young Chadien ladies on the times I had to go up to our dirt airstrip to meet the weekly plane. They always stopped when they saw me there to watch the plane land, their mouths agog at such a thing, all giggling amongst themselves.
I could never get any closer than I did for this pic, any further and they disappeared into the bush, so after the first time I never tried again but they were happy for me to take the picture at this distance.
I used to fly over their encampment every month when I flew out, so low I could see the fear in their eyes as the tiny white craft caused their camels and donkeys to scatter, but they always waved.
I look at this picture and I’m always taken back to the best lemon tart I’ve ever tasted, but that’s another story.
